Lefty

A rose by any other hook would smell as sweet. In this lesson we’ll be crocheting a life-sized rose flower. This pattern requires a few sewn together pieces, and using a wire in the body to make it pose-able and able to wrap around surfaces!

01 Petals

[All in Red]
Magic loop

Rnd 1: [sc 2, ch 2] 3 times in the magic loop (6 + 3 ch spaces)

Work around your tail end with just the last few stitches of the following rounds to keep it at the tip when you’re finished.

{} = Worked in the same stitch

Rnd 2: [sc 2, {sc 1, ch 2, sc 1} worked in the ch space] 3 times (12 + 3 ch spaces)

Rnd 3: [sc 3, {sc 1, ch 2, sc 1} worked in the ch space, sc 1] 3 times (18 + 3 ch spaces)

Rnd 4: [sc 4, {sc 1, ch 2, sc 1} worked in the ch space, sc 2] 2 times, sc 3 (19 + 2 ch spaces, stopping early)

Slst 1, ch 1, cut the yarn and pull through leaving a long enough end to sew onto the Rose Center.

02 Leaf

[All in Green]
Ch 12

Row 1: starting in the 2nd ch from the hook working in the BLO of the chs, slst 1, sc 2, hdc 2, dc 2, tr 1, dc 1, hdc 1, {sc 2} in the last ch (12)

Turn your piece 180°, working in the bottom of the chs starting with the same ch, sc 1, hdc 1, dc 1, tr 1, dc 2, hdc 2, sc 1, slst 1 (10)

Cut the yarn, and pull through. Weave this end into the backs of the stitches down to the base of the leaf. Use the two tail ends to sew onto the stem.

03 Rose Center

[Starting in Red]
Magic loop

Rnd 1: sc 6 in the magic loop (6)

Rnd 2: [sc 1, inc 1] 3 times (9)

Rnds 3-5: sc in each st (9 x 3)

Rnd 6: [sc 1, invdec 1] 3 times (6)

[Change to Green]

mp = Mini Picot
(ch 2, skip 1 ch, slst 1 in the BLO)

Rnd 7: working in the FLO, slst 1, {ch 1, hdc 1, dc 1, mp 1, dc 1, hdc 1, slst 1} into each of the remaining sts (5 petals total)

Rnd 8: working into the BLO from Rnd 6, skip the first, sc in each of the remaining (5)

Rnd 9: sc in each st around (5)

Continue to the Rose Stem after sewing on the petals…

04 Sewing Together

Before beginning the stem it’s best to sew on all the petals to the rose center.

You should have two tail ends per petal. Sew on a petal by using the tail end attached to the end ch, entering through a stitch on the base of the Rose Center (just above the Leaf Petals) and out an adjacent stitch.

Using this same tail go around the adjacent single crochet on the edge of the petal and back into the same stitch on the Rose Center that you just exited and out through the bottom.

Finally, thread the other tail end from the petal onto a needle and enter into the same first stitch on the Rose Center that you did with the previous tail and exit through the bottom of the Rose Center where the other tail end is.

Pull tightly, double knot these two ends together and cut close. Stuff this knot into the Rose Center.

Repeat with each petal. Try to make sure they are not sewn on too symmetrically to better simulate an actual rose.

05 Rose Stem

[Continuing from Rose Center in Green]

The rest of the stem is mostly all single crochet rounds with mp stitches to make thorns scattered between rounds.

mp = Mini Picot
(ch 2, skip 1 ch, slst 1 in the BLO)

I like to add thorns every 2 – 3 rounds and scattered so they’re never lined up with each other and instead on either the opposite side or slightly off center.

Rnds 10-? sc in each st with thorns scattered every 3 – 4 rounds (5 x ?)

Repeat until the desired length. I like making my stem around 9 inches long which is about 40 rounds total give or take depending on gauge.

When you get to your desired length, cut and pull through.

Sew on the leaf around the center of the stem, and stuff up with a strong wire to the tip. Finally, sew closed and give to someone you fancy!
