The Pattern

Use the checkboxes to track your progress
(1:23) The time codes match to the pattern video

01The Horns

[All in White]
Ch 2, Working in the BLO of the 2rd ch from the hook, sc 1

Ch 1, cut the yarn and pull through to sew along the neck and back.

02The Body

[All in Main color]
Ch 2 or use the magic loop method

Rnd 1: Work 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook or into magic loop (4)

Rnd 2: sc 1, inc, working in BLO, sc 1, working in both loops, inc (6)

Rnd 3: inc in each st (12)

Rnd 4: [sc 3, inc] repeat 3 times (15)

Rnd 5: [sc 4, inc] repeat 3 times (18)

Rnd 6: sc 6, working in FLO, sc 1, [hdc 1, m.p, hdc 1] repeat 5 times, sc 1 (18 [+5 m.p])

Alternate Frill Option

Use the following Rnd to create an alternate version of the frill crown which is slightly larger and has a white edging. I’ve even made a second full length video for it which you can watch here!

*Note: dcinc = Double Crochet Increase (2dc in the same stitch)

Rnd 6*: sc 6, working in FLO, sc 1, hdc 1, dcinc 1, dc 1, dcinc 1, dc 2, dcinc 1, dc 1, dcinc 1, hdc 1, sc 1 (22)

Using a strand of white yarn begin going around the outer stitches of the frill towards the center. When you reach the center hide the end down through the center of the frill and into the body. Repeat this same process on the opposite side of the frill so that the white stitches are both pointing inward towards the center of the face.

Rnd 7: sc 6, working in BLO from Rnd 5, sc 12 (18)

Rnd 8: sc 1, bo, sc 2, bo, sc 13 (18)

Add eyes and horns. Eyes go into Rnd 3 stitch number 6 and 11.

Horns are sewn on into the center (using the unused FLO from Rnd 1 as a guide), and just under the frill in Rnd 5 over stitches 10 and 14. See video at (08:18) for detailed instructions.

Rnd 9 - 11: sc in each st (18 x 3)

Rnd 12: sc 2, bo, sc 3, bo, sc 11 (18)

Rnd 13: sc in each st (18)

Rnd 14: [sc 1, invdec] repeat 6 times (12)

Stuff slightly.

Rnd 15: invdec, sc 2, invdec 4 (7)

Stuff fully.

Rnd 16: invdec, sc 1, invdec, sc 1, sl.st 1 (5)

Cut the yarn and pull through. Sew together

  1. Bought your Dino kit. Started with Triceratops. Yellow yarn. Got to part of Round 7. Realized that I must have made mistakes in earlier rounds because I don’t have the stitches you describe in Round 5.

So: I have a strange looking body. Is there enough yellow yarn if I start over?

Can I send an image of what I have to you? P.S. I did review the crochet stitches for beginners, the PDF and the video. Try, try again?

    • You can take out your hook and pull on the yarn to undo as much as you like. That way you won’t need extra yarn, it just sucks having to start over. If you’re not considering that option, then I don’t know.

Being a beginner, something I like to do is count the stitches I have after completing each round. It’s a bit tedious, but if something is off I typically only will have to undo one row. I discovered from watching his video that using a strand of different color yarn is an excellent way to keep track of the beginning and end of rounds. Counting the stitches as you crochet a round is another safety measure so that when you reach the end of the round as marked by a yarn strand, you should have counted all the stitches that were supposed to be crocheted for that row.

Whenever I had a problem, careful observation of the video was usually enough to solve it ( I watched the frill variation live stream). The biggest problem I ran into was for invisible decreases. I would tend to skip a stitch after an invisible decrease which for the last round (4 invdec in a row), caused the work to scrunch up much too quickly.

Other than that, I wish you luck. I’ve heard that crocheting is relaxing, but when I don’t understand why something looks wrong, crocheting makes me frustrated like nothing else ha. I really try to take my time with crocheting because it’s so easy to mess up.

    • Ok I believe there is a typo because if you look at row six and if you look at the video that’s where you use flo so that should be what route you get your blo from. Pay no attention it should still be fine.

  2. I made the pattern but somehow I didn’t get legs! I followed the pattern so am not sure what I did wrong. Watching the video you have legs but this doesn’t. What am I missing?

  3. I’m going to be making a lot of these. They are soooo cute! Everyone loves them and wants one. It was very easy. So far I have made two of each frill type.

  4. My membership level is suppose to contain printer friendly PDFs, but it always brings me to the change member ship level page. Am I missing something here?
