01Hermit Crab

[Starting in Orange]
Magic loop

Rnd 1: sc 6 times into the magic loop (6)

Rnd 2 and 3: sc in each (6 for 2 Rnds)

bump = 2-dc bobble

Change to White for the bumps to make the eyes white!

Rnd 4: inc 2, bump, sc 1, bump, inc 1 (9)

mp = ch 2, slst in the first back loop
leg = ch 3, skip 1, slst 2

Rnd 5: [mp, sc 1] 4 times, leg [ch 3, skip 1, slst 2], sc 1,

Right claw [ch 6, sc2tog, mp, working into chs sc 1, slst 2], sc 2,

Left claw [ch 3, mp, ch 2, skip 1 working into ch and mp back sc2tog, working into chs sc 1,
slst 2],

sc 1, leg, sc 1 (9 scs +8 limbs)

Rnd 6: working around the limbs so that they are on the outside, sc in each (9)

Cut the yarn and pull through, leaving a long enough end to sew closed.

Add safety eyes in the bumps from Rnd 4

Pull the tail end from the beginning through one side of the st between eyes.

Sew closed without stuffing. Pull the tail end through the opposite side of the st between eyes. Stuff into the shell.

02Spiral Shell

[All in Shell Color]
Magic loop

bump = 2-dc cluster (see above)
bumpinc = 2 bumps in 1 st
dc2tog = Double Crochet 2 Together (cluster over two sts)

Rnd 1: bump 6 times in the magic loop (6)

Work into the BLO (back loops only) for all the sts for the rest of the shell.

Rnd 2: bumpinc in each st (12)

Rnd 3: [bump, bumpinc] 6 times (18)

Rnd 4: [bump, dc2tog] 6 times (12)

Rnd 5: dc2tog 3 times, hdc 1, sc 1, slst 1 (9 stopping early)

Cut the yarn, pull through, and hide the end into the back of the next st.

Stuff slightly making sure to leave space for your hermits
body.

Spread out the Rnds a bit to make a long shell! See video for further instruction (Part 2 - 19:17)

03Swirly Shell

All in Shell Color.
Magic Loop

Rnd 1: hdc 8 in the magic loop (8)

Rnd 2 - 8: hdc in each st (8 for 7 Rnds

hdcinc = 2 hdc in 1 st

Rnd 9: hdcinc 1, hdc 7 (9)

Rnd 10 - 11: hdc in each st (9 for 2 Rnds)

Rnd 12: hdc 2, hdcinc 1, hdc 6 (10)

Rnd 13 - 14: hdc in each st (10 for 2 Rnds)

Rnd 15: Working in the BLO, slst in each (10)

Cut the yarn, pull through, and hide the end into the back of the next st.

Stuff very slightly up the tube. Then roll the tube up into a swirl. Try to keep the inc sts from Rnds 9 and 12 on the outside of the swirl for better shaping.

Secure by using a strand of yarn in the same color as the shell onto a darning needle. Enter from the inside of the shell and through the swirl, then back into the shell near the original tail end for knotting
together.

04Alternate Shell Options

You can make any amigurumi a shell by leaving a small un-sewn hole at the bottom of your piece! I suggest trying to keep the hole around 8 - 12 sts around, depending on your hermit crab.

Cut the yarn and hide the end once your stitch count gets to 9 stitches, stuff slightly, before stuffing the hermit crab into the base! If your hole is too big, try slst in the BLO for the last round tightly to create a tighter fit.

  1. Note: when making the left claw chain 6 so you end evenly because when I chained 5 when I went back to do the sc 1 and slt 2 I didn’t have enough stitches to do the sc 1 and slt 2 just so you know when making your own.
